Why Empathy?When working with patients, clinicians exhibit empathy every day. Opportunities for human connection are important for all healthcare professionals. So, what does it mean to engage in empathy-based training? Empathetics is about investing in you. Empathy matters in healthcare because it enhances relationships and communication. Empathy skills help you learn critical information from other people; information that impacts care quality, and the likelihood that others will trust you. Empathy skills also help us more accurately and efficiently process our own emotions - it’s important for self-care. So, what is empathy? Empathy is: A capacity, including several abilities: Understanding thoughts and feelings Feeling others’ emotions temporarily Motivating caring and compassionate behavior Regulating our own emotions to avoid being overwhelmed Differentiating between our own and others’ feelings Empathy is not… Empathy is not: Taking on the emotions of others. Empathy skills involve recognizing and responding to emotions without becoming overwhelmed or losing objectivity. Empathy is not: Agreement You can empathize with someone’s perspective without necessarily agreeing with it. Empathy is not: Just being ‘nice.’ Authentic empathy involves active listening, emotional intelligence, and the ability to respond appropriately to others' experiences. Empathy is not: Sympathy. It’s not just feeling sorry for someone; it’s understanding and connecting with their emotions. Empathy is not: A fixed trait. Empathy is a skill that can be learned, practiced, and strengthened over time. Empathy is not: At odds with healthcare. Recommendations for what is best for another person’s long-term health are not always welcome. At times Empathy includes setting boundaries and limits.
